CCS MINING & INDUSTRIAL

THE COMPANY

CCS Mining and Industrial is a sister company of the well-known and established Construction Computer Software.

From its inception in 1978, Construction Computer Software has focused on developing solutions that accurately represent how construction, mining and owner developer companies control real-world projects through the specialised occupations that manage them.

Over the last few years Construction Computer Software has dramatically expanded into the mining and other industrial sectors. This is due to its software’s exceptional capability to provide the necessary information quickly and effectively, to allow our clients to make decisions timeously on the correct information.

For this reason, Construction Computer Software established CCS Mining & Industrial in 2012, whose business activities are focused on providing business solutions, project management and estimation software to the mining, heavy industrial industries.

CCS Mining & Industrial operate in the Estimating/Project Management and Project Cost Control field. The Company has gained considerable experience in integrating budgets and actual cost by linking Candy and BuildSmart, and focusing on Cost-to-Completion (Earned Value) which is an enormous benefit to any company in the project execution environment and pursuit of better project control.

The company is staffed with suitably experience employees to enable it to provide world class service and support to its ever growing client base.

WHAT WE DO

CCS Mining & Industrial is the sole distributor of the Candy Estimating and Project Control software to the Mining and Minerals industries worldwide and the Southern African distributor to Clean Energy, Heavy Industrial, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, providing product support, training, implementation and consulting services.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

THE CANDY SYSTEM

Candy is easy to use, providing you with a familiar set of tools that allow you to work as you normally would, while giving you the power to share the results with others throughout the project pipeline. This makes Candy one of the most collaborative systems you will ever use, and provides the momentum that drives progress.

To that end, Candy includes Estimating, Valuations, Planning, Cash Flow, and Forecasting modules – all packaged conveniently into a single interface. Each can be configured to your job function, allowing you to interact with other personnel as usual, but in a more efficient and productive manner.

FORECASTING AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

By linking the bill of quantities to the project schedule via the Planning module, Candy provides an initial approximation of monthly expenditure for the duration of the project. This gives the estimator (and management) the added dimension of money and resources over time.

The information contained in this estimate–program link is used by the Cash Flow module to generate a complete financial analysis of the project. This takes account of payment lags, retention, and interest and funding requirements and the effects of projected escalation and foreign currency movements over the lifespan of the project.

Programs can be imported from Primavera and Microsoft Project to provide the activity data for this type of analysis.

THE CANDY ENVIRONMENT

Candy is designed so that a user never has to leave the environment to perform everyday tasks such as storing and archiving estimates, importing external files, querying data or generating reports – these facilities are built in to the system.

No knowledge of the host operating system is required and the estimator only requires basic computer skills to be effective in Candy.

CANDY’S MAIN FEATURES

Quantity Take-off
Seamlessly compile Bills of Quantities electronically from 2D and 3D drawing formats which are fully integrated with the existing Candy Project Control software. The electronic take-off allows you to measure estimating and valuation quantities and uses these quantities for all aspects of project control.

Estimating
A first principles resource-based analytical estimating system that gives estimators the facilities and reports they need to depict project resources and costs accurately across feasibility, pre-tender and post-tender phases.

The estimator can price a bid rapidly and accurately, quickly identifying the critical elements. Pricing libraries facilitate consistent, accurate and well-documented rate build-ups on our unique Free-format Worksheets. Changes can be made in a controlled manner, reducing errors and speeding up the bid preparation.

The estimating module includes facilities for Indirect cost, detailed Resource build-ups including equipment Capital cost, Subcontractors, Alternative Project Estimates, Bid Mark-up and Customisable reporting.

Specifications includes Resource-based analytical estimating; Description and pricing libraries; Electronic bill importing; User-defined document layouts; Free-format rate make-up sheets; Resource and value analysis; Wastage and productivity analysis; Multiple-currency resources and bill; Subcontract databases, enquiry and adjudication; Integration with Planning and Cashflow.

Planning
Provides a powerful critical path network system, which has features useful to both non-planner and professional, is straightforward to use, and helps plan a better project. The planning tool also allows imports/exports from EPS (Enhanced Production Scheduler) Microsoft Projects and Primavera.

The planning module also produces Time/location charts which allow you to represent your gantt chart in a graphical format. Each activity is plotted on the graph against its time and location. This facility is suitable for linear projects such as sinking vertical shafts, incline and decline tunnels.

Cash flow
Models the financial requirements of the project so that the cash flow can be optimised according to the NPV. The data is drawn directly from the link between the estimate and the program. This relationship provides an accurate cash flow based on real calculated project data, thereby eliminating guesses due to the use of theoretical curves.

Forecasting
Allows for monthly forecasts of bill amounts, resources, and quantities from a dynamic link between the estimate and program, to provide invaluable information for feasibility and progress monitoring of a project.

Progress
Is accomplished through the Valuations module, which allows variations in the execution of the plan to be tightly managed, has facilities to control resources and costs, and provides monthly valuations, management reports, and forecasts that establish the progress of the project against the estimate.

Cost Control
The Candy Cost & Allowables system provides the tools to compare your budget/allowable-to-date to the total-cost-incurred-to-date. Candy uses the full power of the Estimating and Valuation System along with the ability to import real-time cost from the accounting system, to allow you to interrogate any losses, and predict losses in other areas. Additional tools are provided to forecast Allowable and Cost to completion.

Earned Value
Provides a facility to forecast and track Allowable and Cost against a Baseline budget. Earned Value in its fullest extent requires monthly forecasts of the Budget, Progress and Actual Cost curves over time. This is achieved through a dynamic link between the estimate and the program. However, even if the program link is not available or not practical, very useful control information can be derived by keeping the past history of Allowable and Cost-to-date and forecasting these values to project completion.

Mining Integration
3-D Design Modelling – The Mine design information can now be imported directly into Candy Estimating and Planning through the integration with EPS, allowing our customers to streamline project /life-of-mine budgets and forecasts.
Changes within the design and project schedule can be updated with ease through the integration module, which allows what-if scenarios to predict the financial impact on design or schedule changes.
Fleet Production – Candy integrates with Fleet Production calculation software such as TALPAC and FPC. This allows our open-cast customers to import their fleet and production calculations for each bench within the mine. During the estimate, multiple fleet and production scenarios could be investigated to determine the optimum fleet to use. The integration was designed to be extremely flexible, which allows for integration with almost any Fleet Production software.

Future Developments
To enable Candy better fulfils the needs of our mining clients, CCS, along with CCSMI, has started on developing additional functionality specifically focused on the mining industry. These initial developments are focused around Earned Value and Cost-to-Complete Forecasting including Currency and Escalation Forecasting.

  • Any new program versions, upgrades, and updates as provided by CCS from time to time.
  • Highly qualified and experience support staff will provide 24/7 software support (Emergency support only after normal business hours) to assist the user to perform complex or unfamiliar tasks. The technical personnel could be contacted via phone or email. They will have the ability to solve problems directly through Candy’s fully interactive, built-in, remote support interface.

PRODUCT TRAINING

The operation of Candy follows standard industry practice and in theory could be used without training. However, Candy instils important organisational practices and without the proper use of these, users would lack the insight to realise the techniques that result in meaningful management information.
This implies that rather than teach from first principles, the courses show ways of getting data into and out of Candy rapidly and how to best use the software to standardise techniques.
Training will be charged over and above the monthly rental and licence fees. Courses are typically one or two days in duration.
All training is conducted by trained and certified Facilitators. The Facilitators have been accredited and certified by ETDP-SETA as Level 5 Facilitators with the ability to Evaluate Learning Intervention under SAQA I.D. 117871 & 123397 respectively – Endorsement Number US-36042.
